Stairway to the Sea

leave a comment »

In this spectacular feature-length documentary, oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and an NFB crew sail up the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes on board the specially equipped vessel, the Calypso. They explore the countryside from their helicopter and plumb the depths of the waters in their diving saucer. They encounter shipwrecks, the Manicouagan power dam, Niagara Falls, the locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway and an underwater chase with caribou.

The Sound of Istanbul

leave a comment »

I am currently staying in Istanbul. And I like this town alot! This documentary, that some turkish friends showed me, makes me like it even more.

Fatih Akin, a Turkish-German Director (Im Juli), shows in Crossing the Bridge not only the turkish music scene – which is very elaborate and popular also among the regions youth – but also draws a nice picture of the diverse life in this massive city.

The Madoff Affair

leave a comment »

On Dec. 11, 2008, Bernard L. Madoff confessed that his vaunted investment business was all “one big lie,” a Ponzi scheme colossal in volume and scope that cost investors $65 billion. Overnight, Madoff became the new poster child for Wall Street gall, greed and corruption.

The most shocking part about this investigation, to me, is that most of the investors knew of the shady nature behind the hedge fund Madoff was selling. It is unfortunate some very respectable people were lured into this by Madoff’s marketing boys.

Taxi to the Dark Side

leave a comment »

Brilliant doc about US prison camps in the Afghan and Iraq wars, the policies on torture and interrogation and the forgotten rule of law.

This is dedicated to two people who are no longer with us, Dilawar, the young Afghan taxi driver, and my father, a navy interrogator who urged me to make this film because of his fury about what was being done to the rule of law. Let’s hope we can turn this country around, move away from the dark side and back to the light.

Synopsis

Using the torture and death in 2002 of an innocent Afghan taxi driver as the touchstone, this film examines changes after 9/11 in U.S. policy toward suspects in the war on terror. Soldiers, their attorneys, one released detainee, U.S. Attorney John Yoo, news footage and photos tell a story of abuse at Bagram Air Base, Abu Ghraib, and Guantanamo Bay. From Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Gonzalez came unwritten orders to use any means necessary. The CIA and soldiers with little training used sleep deprivation, sexual assault, stress positions, waterboarding, dogs and other terror tactics to seek information from detainees. Many speakers lament the loss of American ideals in pursuit of security.

Frontline: Ten Trillion and Counting

leave a comment »

During our last FRONTLINE party, which is due when a new one comes out, we watched “Ten trillion and counting”. It’s a frightening portrayal of the current dept situation of the USA, which makes one wonder how deep the United States budget deficit can be before other countries, like China, stop trusting the government bonds and plunge the the nation into bankruptcy.

Human v2.0

with 3 comments

A BBC Classic:

Meet the scientific prophets who claim we are on the verge of creating a new type of human – a human v2.0.

It’s predicted that by 2029 computer intelligence will equal the power of the human brain. Some believe this will revolutionise humanity – we will be able to download our minds to computers extending our lives indefinitely. Others fear this will lead to oblivion by giving rise to destructive ultra intelligent machines.

One thing they all agree on is that the coming of this moment – and whatever it brings – is inevitable.

Interesting and refreshing, makes you ponder how the symbiosis of humanity and technology will look like.

Obama Deception

leave a comment »

After having been made aware again of that movie by Tian, I decided to watch it, even though I originally discarded it as uninteresting. It’s a 1:30 hour long documentary that hypothesizes that Obama is just as tied up in conspiratory circles like Bush and the presidents before him. As you can guess now, it’s not a documentary about Obama per se, but a movie that features the world dominion theories of Alex Jones. Enjoyed with caution it can shed light on some misconceptions about our believes that we are governed by an independent executive. Check the facts!

Human, All Too Human : Nietzsche

An excellent documentary on Nietzsche. Gives a good overview over his life, philosophy and influence. I like the good style of the filming with majestic nature scenes and impressive narrating of quotes of his works. It helped me understand this most misunderstood philosopher better.

It was made by the BBC in 1999.

We feed the World

with one comment

A great documentary about our food. A hint from my personal guru john. thanks dude!

We feed the World

Unbelievable abilities.

Daniel T. is a “super brain.” He can calculate numbers to hundreds of decimal points in seconds and learn new languages in a week. Through a series of real world challenges and complex number problems, Daniel’s amazing abilities are demonstrated
